Potain Tower Crane Load Chart: A No-Nonsense Guide

But a rated capacity is not a clearance to lift that load in every condition. Wind speed, ground conditions, dynamic loading, rigging weight, and the condition of the crane all matter.

I've sat in meetings where the argument was about the load chart when it should have been about soil conditions under the tower base. That part is beyond my expertise. It's structural and geotechnical work. Find a lift engineer who can look at the whole picture.

If someone says the load chart says okay and doesn't ask about the site, walk away. That phrase is a sign that the chart is being used as a shortcut, not as part of a safe lift plan.

How to Tell Which Scenario You're In

Here's a simple way to decide:

  • Scenario 1: The crane is already assigned to a job or arriving soon. You need to verify capacity, and you need answers fast.
  • Scenario 2: You own a crane, are considering buying one, or you're ordering parts. Documentation and part numbers matter more than speed.
  • Scenario 3: You're planning a complicated lift. Plan first, then check the chart.

If you're still not sure, there's no shame in asking. I've learned the hard way that a 15-minute conversation with an expert beats three hours of searching for the wrong document online.

And if you're a smaller contractor with one crane need, don't let anyone make you feel like your question is too small. The best suppliers give the same load chart to a one-week rental as they do to a two-year fleet. That's not charity. That's just good business.
