Every equipment buyer hits the same fork in the road: new machine or used machine?

I've spent the last four years on the quality side of that decision. Used equipment is a different game. The ticket price is just the entry fee. The full cost gets written later, in repairs, downtime, and the hours spent verifying what you bought.

A new crane reaches the site with everything that makes it ready: certificates, manuals, training records, warranty, and a dealer who answers the phone. Commissioning follows a documented procedure. You can plan the erection date and actually hit it.

A used crane shows up with whatever the previous owner passed on. Sometimes that's a complete service history. Sometimes it's a binder of receipts and a shrug.

Go used if you personally know the machine's history, if the project is short enough to limit risk, or if you're adding backup capacity to an existing fleet. Budget 10–20% above the sticker price before you start negotiating. And get the service history in writing—the request alone tells you a lot about the seller.

There's no shame in paying for verification. It's much cheaper than paying for surprises.

No matter which path you choose, the non-negotiables stay the same: verify the load chart against the actual jib configuration, test the crane under load before it goes to site, and ask about spare parts lead times before you commit, not when something breaks.

The MDT 809 is one of the more versatile Potain tower cranes I've inspected—a genuinely strong performer in the right application. But whether you buy it new or used, the difference between a smart purchase and a costly education comes down to how thoroughly you verify what you're buying. That part is on you.
