I'm the quality inspector at a crane equipment supplier that handles Potain tower cranes and Potain parts. I review roughly 200 items a year before they are released to customers. In Q1 2024 I rejected 6% of first deliveries because of documentation or specification mismatches. This FAQ covers the questions I hear most about Potain luffing tower cranes—and a few of the odd searches that land people here.

1. What is a Potain luffing tower crane?

A Potain luffing tower crane has a jib that can be raised and lowered, which changes the working radius without swinging the whole tower. Potain offers luffing tower cranes in its MR family and in several larger MDT models. These cranes are popular on dense city sites because the jib can pass above an existing building or get out of another crane's slewing path. The movement is not the same as a trolley jib crane moving along a fixed arm. With luffing, the point of the jib moves in an arc, and that is usually what gives you the clearance you need. Potain's current model lineup changes, so check the latest documentation before committing to a rental or purchase.

2. When is a luffer the right choice—and when isn't it?

Buy or rent a Potain luffer when clearance controls the job: protected street lines, occupied buildings beside the crane, or multiple cranes on a tight plan. I've seen luffers keep a project moving because the operator can dip the jib below the adjacent building line without stopping work. But for an open site with no height restrictions, a flat-top or trolley jib crane is often cheaper and can offer a larger lifting envelope. I know that's not a glamorous answer, but it's the one I give when clients ask for a recommendation.

3. Can I use generic parts instead of Potain parts?

I'm careful here. There are some non-crane items—hoses, clamps, light bulbs—where a tested industrial equivalent may work. But for load-path components, I specify genuine Potain parts or parts with matching engineering documentation. Every critical part should have a material certificate, a serial or lot number, and an inspection interval. It's not like maintaining a Mustang truck where you can fit an aftermarket part and see if it lasts. If a crane part fails, you don't get a second test on the highway. And if a generic hose has the same connector as a gas pump hose, that does not make it acceptable for a luffing cylinder.

4. What should I check before accepting a used Potain luffer?

Start with the identity of the machine, not the paint. I check serial numbers on the mast, jib, counter-jib, and slewing section against the manual and load chart. If new paint is hiding old welds, paint will not show you that. I also look at pivot pins at the jib heel, luffing rope sockets, and torque marks on the slew ring bolts. In 2022, I received a used Potain luffer from a reseller where the main structure looked right, but holes in a splice joint were 3 mm off the Potain drawing. The vendor wanted to modify the hole. We rejected the unit. That rejection cost the seller a $22,000 redo. After that, every contract we write includes a serialized inspection and a load test before handover.

5. Is luffing maintenance more demanding than a trolley jib?

The conventional wisdom is that luffing cranes are always more expensive to maintain. From what I see in the field, it's not that simple. The extra attention is concentrated in specific places: luffing rope, rope sockets, sheaves, and the pivot pins at the jib heel. If those are checked on a condition-based schedule, a Potain luffer is not a maintenance nightmare. The cost problem usually appears when someone treats luffing components like ordinary fixed-jib parts and skips the inspection points. In my experience, most critical issues are small before they are big—broken wires near an equalizer sheave, a loose pin lock, a missing torque mark. Those are easy to find if you look in the right place.

6. What do stork vs crane and other unrelated searches have to do with Potain?

Less than you might think. A crane is both a bird and a construction machine. A stork is just a bird. The construction crane got its name from the bird's long neck and lifting motion, but Potain is not in the business of supplying feathers for storks.
