For example, if my tightest pick is at 18 meters and the heaviest load is 3.5 tons, I need a crane that gives me at least 4 tons at that radius with a safety margin. The Potain MR 415, for instance, offers different jib options; I make sure the specific configuration on the quote matches my actual lift profile.

I want to see: shipping to site, crane assembly/erection cost (if applicable), foundation requirements (some Potain models need specific base plates), commissioning support, and first-year service package. A vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end because there are no surprises.

Step 3: Check the Dealer Service Network (Before You Buy)
Everyone talks about the crane's specs and price. Almost nobody talks about what happens when a Potain crane needs a replacement part at 2 AM on a Thursday. A common misconception is that all dealers are the same—this isn't true. Some stocking dealers have dedicated parts centers, while others are purely sales and broker service.
What I ask now: "What is the average response time for a critical part (like a hoist motor or control board) within a 200-mile radius of my primary job site?" I also confirm if the dealer has factory-trained technicians or if they subcontract.
Checkpoint: Ask for the name of a technician who's done a Potain-specific service call in the last 90 days. If the dealer can't provide one, your first breakdown could take days to resolve.
Step 4: Vet the Documentation (It's Often the Problem)
This one sounds boring, but it's where I've caught the most issues. The specifications—jib length, hoist speed, power supply voltage, transport dimensions—all have to match your site conditions exactly. The number one source of friction I've seen? Misaligned expectations on delivery timing and site readiness. The crane might arrive on the promised date, but if the site's foundation isn't ready or the access road is blocked, you're paying crane rental costs while it sits idle.
What I do now: I require a delivery timeline with three dates: (1) crane ships from dealer, (2) estimated arrival at site, (3) projected ready-for-operation date. I build in at least a 3-day buffer for weather or logistics hiccups. And I put this timeline into the contract—so if the dealer delays and the crane sits idle, the cost allocation is clear.
Checkpoint: Ask the dealer: "If the crane arrives at my site on a specific date, what are the three most common reasons that it's not operational within the first two days?" Their answer will tell you exactly where your plan might fall apart.
Common Mistakes I Still See (And a Few I Made)
- The 'cheapest spec' trap: Going with a model that's just barely powerful enough for your max load. If your site conditions change even slightly, you're underpowered.
- Assuming the dealer's data sheet is 'site-verified.' It's not. The dealer sells the machine. You verify the fit.
- Underestimating foundation work. Some Potain models require specific base plate designs. If you don't confirm this early, the crane arrives and you discover a week delay.
- Not asking about service parts stocking. A dealer who stocks parts for your specific crane model can solve a problem in 24 hours. One who orders from a central warehouse? That's 3-5 days minimum, maybe longer.
These five steps won't make you a crane engineer. But they will make sure the crane you order is the one that works on your site, at the total cost you expect, and with a service network that's actually there when you need it.
