There’s No ‘Best’ Potain Crane—There’s Only the Right Fit for Your Site
If you search for 'Potain tower crane,' you’ll find a lot of specs. Max load radius, jib length, tower height under hook. All of that matters. But after six years of managing procurement for a mid-sized general contractor in the mountain west (and racking up about 170 rental and purchase orders across three states), I can tell you something else matters more: matching the crane’s operational characteristics to your specific site conditions.
There’s no single ‘best’ model. An MDT 809 is great for a certain type of project. It’s a nightmare on another. Here’s how I think about it—broken down by two common, but very different, construction scenarios.
Scenario A: High-Density City Work & Tight Urban Sites
This is what most people picture when they think of a tower crane—a boom extending over a busy street, lifting steel or concrete into a tight footprint. If you’re working on a site in downtown Salt Lake City (or really any urban core), your limiting factor isn’t just lifting capacity. It’s the way the crane occupies the site.
Your Play: A Potain City Crane or a Luffing Jib
For these conditions, I almost always lean toward a Potain city crane line (like the Igo series or an MCT with a luffing jib option) or a dedicated luffing crane (MR series). The cost per lift is usually a bit higher than a top-slewing flat-top—or rather, the rental rate is higher, but the total cost of occupying the site is lower. You’re paying a premium for the crane’s ability to work under a restricted jib angle or to fold up and allow adjacent work.
- Why a city crane here? The self-erecting feature saves a cost that many new project managers don’t calculate—the mobilization cost of a mobile crane to assemble a tower. An Igo T 85 self-erects. That can save $3,000–$5,000 on a two-day crane rental for assembly. (Should mention: Our team once budgeted for a mobile crane, and realized the Igo saved us 11 hours of rigging time over the course of the project.)
- When a luffing jib (MR) is better: If you’re slewing over an existing structure, you need the jib to articulate up and down. A flat-top will hit the building next door. An MR 225, for example, can work with a short radius and still give you 8 tonnes of capacity near the mast.
- Here’s the catch: City cranes often have lower maximum hook heights and less capacity at the tip. If your project requires lifting heavy steel above 80 meters, the Igo series isn’t your solution—no matter how convenient the self-erecting feature is.
Scenario B: Open-Area, Large-Scale Projects (Bridges, Warehouses, Subdivisions)
Now we’re on the other side. You have a large, open footprint. You need to move a lot of material across the site. Speed and reach are the drivers—not jib articulation or self-erection.
Your Play: A High-Capacity Top-Slewing Flat-Top (MDT/MCT Series)
This is where the Potain MDT or MCT series shines. They’re built for volume. They’re cheaper per tonne-meter of capacity than a luffing crane. If I’m bidding on a warehouse project with a 100-meter span, I’m looking at an MDT 809—it’s a workhorse. The jib is 80 meters, and it can handle 6.5 tonnes at the tip. For that project, it is the most productive tool.
- Why not a city crane? The Igo simply doesn’t have the radius. You’d need to reposition the crane twice, which costs two days of labor and a mobile crane. That’s a $7,000 hidden cost.
- Key decision point: The MDT 809 uses a Jost-type tower connection. That’s standard here—it’s an industry standard for high-capacity towers (if you ask me, it’s the most reliable bolting system). But if your site has soft soil and you cannot pile a deep foundation, you might need a broader base. An MCT 85 might have a smaller mast section but a wider base, which is easier to configure for certain soil reports. I still kick myself for not thinking about soil compatibility earlier—we had a mobile crane stuck for a day because the foundation for the MDT was sized for deeper soil than we had.
Scenario C: When You Should Walk Away From a ‘Perfect’ Model
I have mixed feelings about the ‘one crane fits all’ approach. On one hand, standardization saves on training and spare parts. On the other, I’ve seen a contractor try to use a long-jib flat-top on a site that was physically too narrow for the counter-jib to swing. It was a mess.
When NOT to use a Potain Flat-Top MDT:
- If your site has a tight turn and you cannot pre-assemble the jib segments on the ground in a straight line.
- If you’re working within 5 meters of a permanent overhead power line (the luffing MR is safer here).
- If your project requires a crane to be un-assembled and re-assembled in less than 4 days. (A self-erecting model is the only answer.)
I get it—you see a used MDT 809 at a good price and think, “I can make this work.” To be fair, you probably can, but the hidden cost of fitting a square peg into a round hole will eat your savings. I’ve tracked those costs in our system—an average of $1,100 per day for rigging adjustments.
How to Know Which Scenario You’re In
Look at your job site plan for the next 90 days. Answer these three questions:
- What is the ratio of tall building to open area? If it’s over 50% building, you want a luffing or city crane. If under 20%, go for the flat-top.
- How much does a mobile crane cost to hire for assembly in your area? If it’s over $3,500, a self-erecting crane pays itself back quickly.
- Can I pre-assemble the jib on the ground without blocking traffic? If no, stop considering flat-tops.
If you’re still unsure, walk the site and take a photo of the widest point. Potain has a good dealer network in the US—call them (as of Jan 2025, I’ve used the Utah dealer). But come to them with these three answers. That’s the difference between a recommendation that works and a generic sales pitch. Over the past 150+ orders, I’ve learned that the best deal is the one that fits the site, not the one with the lowest monthly rate.
