- Free-standing height vs. tied height. If the crane needs tie-ins and your building has nowhere to anchor, you're in trouble from day one.
- Jib clearance. Tight site? A luffing jib handles it. Plenty of open access? A flat-top typically gives you more capacity per dollar.
Here's my cost-nerd advice: calculate cost per lift during your densest work period, not the project average. I've watched contractors buy bigger than they need and pay for it every single day in fuel, setup labor, and extra mast sections. The most expensive crane is the one that sits idle. Period.
Step 2: Price Out the Full Delivered Cost
When someone says "Potain tower cranes for sale," they usually mean the asking price. That's the smallest number in the transaction. Not being dramatic.
In Q2 2024, I was working a deal for a Potain self-erecting crane quoted at $185,000. Sounded fine. Then we added the parts the quote didn't include: freight and insurance ($8,400), customs paperwork ($1,150), a secondary crane for assembly ($3,800), concrete counterweight blocks ($6,200), and transportation of the mast sections ($2,900). The same logic applies to bundle deals. A dealer once offered me a package: two scrapers, a Milwaukee air compressor, and a Potain crane, all at a "bundle price" that looked way better than buying separately. Then I checked the line items. The scrapers were priced $4,000 above market each. The Milwaukee air compressor had a setup fee triple the normal rate. The crane was priced fine — but the bundle saved us exactly nothing. - Get the serial number and request a history report from the manufacturer.
- Ask for service and inspection records for every mast section, jib component, and the slew ring.
- Verify the load chart matches the configuration — never accept handwritten load charts.
- Check compliance certifications for your jurisdiction. This varies by state and country.
- If records are thin, drop your offer by the cost of a full third-party inspection, usually $3,000 to $8,000 depending on the crane. Or walk. Both are acceptable.
The slew ring is the single most expensive component to replace. If the seller can't or won't show documentation on it, that's a red flag the size of the crane itself.
Step 4: Map the Parts and Service Network Before You Commit
Potain's dealer network is one of the reasons contractors choose the brand. I don't have hard data on how their average response times compare across the industry, but based on seven years of parts orders, my sense is they're above average. Here's the catch: "above average" doesn't help when the specific part you need is sitting in a warehouse twelve hours away.
Ask these three questions before you buy:
- Which dealer within reasonable distance actually stocks parts for this model family?
- What's the typical wait for critical items — brakes, hoist parts, sensors, hydraulic seals?
- Does the dealer offer a support contract? If yes, what's the monthly cost and what exactly does it cover?
I learned this one the hard way. We bought a crane that was popular in Europe but rare in our region. The crane itself worked fine. But when a hydraulic cylinder seal kit failed, we waited six weeks for a $350 part. The crane sat idle. The site schedule slipped. I costed that downtime at about $1,850 a day in delays and idle labor. A $32,000 mistake, all because I didn't check parts availability before signing.
Step 5: Budget for Training and Safety Compliance (Where Accidents Actually Happen)
Here's a question that should be on every crane buyer's checklist: which of the following is the most dangerous factor among crane accidents? Most people answer high-voltage lines, wind, or mechanical failure. Those all kill people. But when you look at tower crane incidents specifically, the deadliest moments aren't during normal lifting operations. They're during assembly, climbing, and dismantling.
Operator error in those phases is the factor that shows up again and again. According to OSHA's construction crane standard (29 CFR 1926.1400), crane operators must be certified or qualified, and employers are responsible for verifying it. That's a compliance requirement, but it's also a budget line. If your crew has only run other brands, a Potain self-erecting tower crane has its own control layout and erection sequence. Budget for that transition.
Get the operator trained by someone who knows Potain specifics. Get your riggers and signal persons through tower-crane hazard orientation if they haven't done one. And never let a crew erect a tower crane for the first time without a manufacturer rep present. That rep costs money. A collapsed crane costs a lot more — plus injuries, plus liability, plus insurance that climbs for years after.
I know procurement people who treat these as optional extras. They aren't. The line between "saved $4,000 on training" and "crane came down during erection" is the thinnest line in this industry.
Step 6: Think About the Exit Before You Enter
A tower crane is a long-term asset. But it's not a forever asset. Before you commit, research the resale reality:
- Is this model still in production? If not, how long will spare parts be available? Discontinued models get harder to sell every year.
- Is there an active used market for this crane in your region? If your project portfolio changes, can you move it?
- What do similar units actually sell for at auction or through brokers? Look at real results, not dealer list prices.
The difference this makes is huge. In 2022, I had to offload two cranes when a project backlog collapsed. One was a model with strong market demand. Sold in three weeks for 74% of what we paid. The other was a niche luffing jib that only suited a specific kind of job. Took nine months. We got 52% back. Same age. Same maintenance. Wildly different outcomes.
Common Mistakes I've Seen (and Made)
- Buying maximum capacity for "flexibility." Flexibility has a daily cost. Buy for the jobs you actually have, not the ones you're hoping to win.
- Ignoring the mast sections. Two cranes can have identical cabs and the same model number — while one mast shows rust, corrosion, or hairline cracks at the bolt holes. Inspect every single section before you pay.
